Understanding

What is Islam?

Islam is an Arabic word meaning “submission” and “peace” — submission to the will of Allah (God) and finding peace through that connection. It is not a new religion, but the final and complete message sent through Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

A Muslim is someone who submits their will to Allah alone, worshipping Him as He commanded and following the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Islam teaches a direct relationship with God — no intermediaries needed. Every person can turn to Allah in prayer, seek His forgiveness, and receive His mercy directly.

Core Beliefs

  • Belief in One God (Allah)
  • Belief in all the Prophets and Messengers
  • Belief in the Angels
  • Belief in the Divine Books
  • Belief in the Day of Judgment
  • Belief in Divine Decree (Qadr)

The Creator

Who is Allah?

Allah is the Arabic name for the One True God, the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists. Allah has no partners, no children, and nothing is like Him. He is the same God worshipped by Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and all the prophets (peace be upon them all).

Allah is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. His mercy encompasses all things, and He loves to forgive those who sincerely turn to Him. He is All-Knowing, All-Hearing, and All-Seeing — closer to us than we realize.

“Say, ‘He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.'”

— Qur’an 112:1-4

The Final Messenger

Who is Prophet Muhammad ﷺ?

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (peace be upon him) was born in Makkah in the year 570 CE. At the age of 40, he received the first revelation from Allah through the Angel Gabriel, beginning his mission as the final Prophet and Messenger.

He is the best example for humanity — in his worship, his character, his dealings with others, and his devotion to Allah. Muslims follow his teachings (the Sunnah) as the practical implementation of the Qur’an.

He was known for his honesty, compassion, and justice. Even before prophethood, his people called him “Al-Amin” (the Trustworthy). He taught that the best of people are those who are most beneficial to others.
